Organic SunFiber Instructions

Research on SunFiber® (PHGG – partially hydrolyzed guar gum) suggests it may help support:

How to Start Organic SunFiber

The following suggestions help introduce Nutrition Detective Organic SunFiber during the FIRST TWO WEEKS:

  • Take only a PINCH per day (you can pinch it with your fingers or use our fractional teaspoons to measure)
  • It is OK if you are sensitive and want to start with even LESS
  • This can be mixed in food or any drink. You won’t notice it. It does NOT “gel” or thicken (like psyllium does)
  • You can take it all at once or spread it out through the day in a bottle of water (this second option may be better for sensitive individuals)
  • Do NOT go over this dose for the first 2 weeks. This allows your gut microbiome time to adjust.
  • Do NOT change anything else you were doing to help your pooping
  • Do NOT increase or change other things during this 2 weeks

What to Expect in the First Two Weeks

Sunfiber/PHGG may begin influencing your gut microbiome. This is why we start slowly.

You may notice temporary digestive changes, which are common when increasing dietary fiber.

Examples include:

  • Increased gas (may smell or may not smell)
  • Burping
  • Temporary bloating OR or previous bloating/distension may improve
  • If you tend toward constipation, your bowels may become slightly loose
  • If you tend toward loose bowels, you may temporarily feel a bit constipated

These changes do not necessarily mean you are having a negative reaction.

Your gut microbiome may simply be adjusting to increased fiber intake.

That said, if symptoms are uncomfortable, reduce the dose or take a short break for a few days, then resume the process until you have completed 14 total days of the “pinch” starting dose.

After the First Two Weeks

Once you are past the first two weeks, you can:

  • Stay at a pinch if it seems to be working well enough
  • Increase very slowly (best for sensitive types)
  • Some people choose to increase more quickly (“if you’re going to be dumb, you better be tough!”), though gradual increases are generally better tolerated.

What Is My Optimal Dose?

The best dose (AFTER the 2 weeks of the “pinch”) is the amount that helps you feel and poop better.

If a lower amount works best for you, there is no need to take more.

We always aim for the Minimal Effective Dose.

Additional notes:

  • Some people do well with only a pinch
  • Most research studies use 5–10 grams per day
  • Our scoop provides 6.5 grams per serving
  • One serving per day fits within the common research range
  • It is not suggested to exceed 1 scoop twice per day

Now, go forth and poop better!

Lactoferrin Lactoferrin

Lactoferrin Instructions

Please read these instructions *carefully* to help you get the most benefit while minimizing symptom aggravations. Strong “medicines” and supplements require proper respect.

What Is Lactoferrin?

Lactoferrin is a purified protein typically derived from mammalian milk. It is also naturally present in many human body fluids.

Research suggests lactoferrin may support several processes relevant to health:

• Supports healthy bile flow and liver function

• May bind certain metals such as copper

• Rapid increases in intake may temporarily aggravate symptoms in some individuals

• Helps support balanced iron metabolism

• Supports a balanced gut microbiome

• Digestive adjustment may occur early as the body adapts

• Research also suggests immune-supporting effects

•  Some individuals report changes in increased bile flow when beginning lactoferrin

Taking too much too quickly may increase the chance of symptom aggravation, so slowly increasing dosing is important.

Important Starting Guidance

Important: If you increase lactoferrin too quickly for your body, you may temporarily feel worse.

If symptoms become unmanageable or excessively unpleasant, reduce your dose by half and reassess.

Repeat dose reductions if needed until you reach a dose you tolerate comfortably.

Temporary dose reductions are usually more helpful than stopping completely.

Lactoferrin may support bile flow and liver-related processes, which is why increasing too quickly may temporarily aggravate symptoms.

Sensitivity varies between individuals, particularly those with long-standing health concerns.

Who Should Go the Slowest?

People most likely to experience symptom aggravation should increase doses more gradually:

  • Women (cholestasis and bile flow issues are more common in women)
  • Older individuals
  • People with long-standing health issues
  • Individuals with severe health conditions
  • People sensitive to supplements, medications, chemicals, scents, or allergens.

Starting Lactoferrin

Many people feel worse because they increase the dose too quickly.

The key principle is slow progress within your body’s tolerance levels.

Measuring Small Doses

Fractional measuring spoons are helpful for accurate dosing:

  • DROP = 1/64 tsp
  • SMIDGEN = 1/32 tsp
  • PINCH = 1/16 tsp
  • DASH = 1/8 tsp
  • TAD = 1/4 tsp

Preparation of Small Doses

Open a capsule into an airtight container or bag and store it in the refrigerator between uses.

(This refrigeration is only necessary after capsules are opened.)

Initial Starting Dose

Start with:

1 DROP (1/64 teaspoon) per day

Take the first dose with dinner.

The powder may be:

  • placed directly in the mouth
  • mixed with water
  • mixed with food

Lactoferrin has minimal taste.

Evaluate for 7 Days

Observe how you feel over the next 7 days, especially the first 3 days.

If symptoms become unmanageable, go to the dose reduction section.

If you feel neutral or better, continue the same dose.

Dose Reduction

If symptoms occur:

Reduce the dose by half (for example, half a DROP).

Reassess for 7 days.

Repeat dose reductions until you reach a comfortable dose.

Dose Increases

If you feel neutral or better:

Stay at 1 DROP for at least 1 month.

Then increase to:

SMIDGEN = 1/32 tsp

Remain at each new dose for at least 1 month before increasing.

Dose Progression

Typical progression:

Drop – 1/64 tsp (~17 mg)
Smidgen – 1/32 tsp (~34 mg)
Pinch – 1/16 tsp (~69 mg)
Dash – 1/8 tsp (~138 mg)
Tad – 1/4 tsp (~275 mg)
1 capsule – 315 mg

Each increase roughly doubles the dose, which is why slow progression is recommended.

Maximum Suggested Dose

The maximum suggested dose is 2 capsules (630 mg) per day, taken together or separated, with meal(s).

You do not need to reach this dose to benefit.

Many individuals do well at lower doses.

Pulse Dosing

Pulse dosing means splitting your daily dose into smaller portions throughout the day.

This may help some people tolerate lactoferrin more comfortably.

When to Take Lactoferrin

Priority 1 — Take With Food

Taking lactoferrin on an empty stomach may increase digestive symptoms.

Always take it with food, even when pulse dosing.

Priority 2 — Take With Zinc (If Used)

Lactoferrin may help transport zinc and influence copper balance.

If you take zinc supplements, taking them together may be helpful.

Individuals who have previously reacted strongly to zinc may also react to lactoferrin.

Priority 3 — Choose the Best Time for You

Some people feel relaxed or sleepy when taking lactoferrin.

These individuals may prefer evening dosing.

If lactoferrin affects sleep negatively, take it earlier in the day.

What to Take Lactoferrin With

Take lactoferrin at the same time as any:

  • Food
  • Zinc supplements (if using)
  • Probiotic supplements or foods (if using)
  • Iron supplements (if using)

Over time, some people find they no longer need probiotic supplements.

If Symptoms Occur

Lactoferrin may influence bile flow and liver processes.

Increasing doses too quickly may lead to temporary symptom flare-ups.

If symptoms occur:

  • Reduce your dose by half
  • Reassess every 3-7 days
  • Continue reducing until symptoms calm down

Once stable, you may resume gradual dose increases.

Emotional or Symptom Changes

Some individuals report temporary changes in mood, sleep, dreams, or symptoms during adjustment.

These usually resolve within a few days.

If You Are Unsure

If you are ever uncertain:

Reduce the dose or take a break.

Lactoferrin and Probiotics

Lactoferrin supports gut microbiome balance.

If probiotics have:

• produced no benefits
• caused mixed results
• caused negative reactions

You may consider stopping probiotics and introducing lactoferrin slowly.

If probiotics have been consistently helpful, you may continue them.

Capsule Strength

Nutrition Detective Lactoferrin contains:

315 mg per capsule

If using another brand, adjust dosing accordingly.

Keystone Minerals Keystone Minerals

Keystone Minerals Instructions

Daily Dose

A maximum of one (1) capsule of Keystone Minerals per day (one capsule contains 30mg zinc, 150mcg selenium, and 150mcg molybdenum) is suggested if one is not doing regular nutritional testing (hair & blood testing) to monitor their mineral levels.

Do not add other supplemental sources of zinc, selenium, or molybdenum unless you are monitoring your mineral levels.

Capsules can be opened to take less than a full capsule if desired.

How To Take Keystone Minerals

Always take Keystone Minerals with food.

Taking Keystone Minerals on an empty stomach or without enough food can result in nausea due to the zinc content. Eating more food will resolve the nausea quickly if it happens.

To maximize absorption, take Keystone Minerals with your lowest-fiber meal of the day, as high-fiber meals may reduce mineral absorption.

How to Start Keystone Minerals

NOTE: If you take more Keystone Minerals than your body tolerates, you may experience uncomfortable symptoms. This is likely due to changes in mineral balance and “stirring up copper”, as zinc, selenium, and molybdenum are all copper antagonists.

The key is to find the dose that causes no negative symptoms, even if that dose is very small at the beginning.

Your tolerance level may change over time.

Suggested Starting Dose

For NON-sensitive people:

Start with one (1) capsule per day for one (1) week while watching for positive or negative symptoms.

If everything feels normal after the first week, continue with that dose.

If symptoms occur at one (1) capsule per day, do one of the following:

  • Take LESS than one (1) capsule per day (by opening capsules and only taking a partial dose) OR
  • Stop the Keystone Minerals and introduce each mineral separately (we sell all the minerals separately, so you can customize your dosing of each one)

Sensitive people should begin with less than one capsule per day.

Possible Symptoms From Taking Too Much

If you take more Keystone Minerals than your body tolerates, you may experience uncomfortable symptoms. This is likely due to changes in mineral balance and “stirring up copper”, as zinc, selenium, and molybdenum are all copper antagonists. These symptoms could include, and are not limited to:

• Fatigue or brain fog
• Anxiety, depression, or irritability
• Racing mind
• Inner trembling or nerves buzzing (electric feeling)
• Limb weakness (arms, legs, or both)
• Headaches
• Trouble falling asleep initially
• Heart palpitations (especially before bed)
• ANYTHING you feel is hormonally-related

If symptoms are significant, reduce the dose or discontinue use and consult a qualified healthcare professional.

Zinc + Niacin Salve Zinc + Niacin Salve

Zinc + Niacin Salve Instructions

Important Note About Flushing

NOTE: This salve contains flush niacin.

If you have never taken flush niacin before, the “flush” can include:

  • skin redness (erythema)
  • skin warmth or heat
  • itching
  • Tingling

This reaction is temporary and typically resolves within a few hours.

It is not an allergic reaction.

Taking a baby aspirin (81 mg) or half an adult aspirin (~163 mg) may reduce the flushing, while also reducing the benefits of using the salve.

Using the salve daily will may reduce the flushing response over time.

If you normally take flush niacin supplements, you will likely experience little or no flushing from using the salve.

Applying larger amounts of salve may increase the likelihood of a flushing reaction.

How to Apply

If this is your first time using the salve, do a patch test.

Apply a small amount (rub it in well) to an unexposed, quarter-sized area and watch for any flushing reaction for the next 1–2 hours.

Once you are familiar with your response to the salve, you can apply it to the skin or to areas of concern.

The salve may be rubbed into the palm to soften and warm it before applying to sensitive areas.

It can be applied as needed, or multiple times per day if desired.

Do not apply to open wounds or mucous membranes.

Magnesium Lotion Magnesium Lotion

Magnesium Lotion Instructions

Dosing

Recommended Use: For most people, about 2 full pumps worth of this magnesium lotion is enough to support adequate magnesium levels.

Additional lotion may be used if desired.

It may also be used as a regular moisturizing lotion.

Where to Apply

The following areas are commonly used for applying magnesium lotion:

  • Stiff or achy joints
  • Tight or sore muscles
  • Areas experiencing muscle cramping (including menstrual cramps)
  • On skin areas over parts of the body where support is desired
  • Areas that grow little or no hair

Where NOT to Apply

Do not apply over mucous membranes (eyes, mouth, female genitalia, etc.).

If you apply this to your feet, be aware they may become slippery on smooth surfaces.

If you are doing hair mineral testing, applying the lotion to the neck may contaminate the next hair test and make your magnesium level appear higher than it actually is. Running your hands through your hair after applying magnesium lotion may cause the same effect. If this occurs, simply inform your practitioner.

Selenium Glycinate 150 mcg Selenium Glycinate 150 mcg

Selenium Glycinate 150 mcg Instructions

Dosing

Standard dose: 1 capsule per day with food.

Unless directed by a practitioner or confirmed through testing, it is generally suggested not to exceed 200 mcg of selenium per day from supplements.

How to Take

Always take selenium supplements with food.

Selenium can be taken at any time of day, though many people prefer taking it with their morning meal.

Possible Signs of Low Selenium Status

Low selenium status may be present if one or more of the following signs occur:

  • Poor thyroid function or difficulty supporting normal thyroid metabolism
  • Fatigue or low energy
  • Reduced immune resilience
  • Difficulty supporting normal detoxification processes

These signs can have many possible causes, so testing may be helpful when possible.

Dosing

Standard dose: 1 capsule per day with food.

Unless directed by a practitioner or confirmed through testing, it is generally suggested not to exceed 200 mcg of selenium per day from supplements.

How to Take

Always take molybdenum supplements with food.

Molybdenum can be taken at any time of day.

Possible Signs of Low Molybdenum Status

Low molybdenum status may be present if one or more of the following signs occur:

  • Difficulty tolerating sulfur-containing foods (such as garlic, onions, eggs, or cruciferous vegetables)
  • Sensitivity to sulfites (commonly found in wine, dried fruit, and preserved foods)
  • Sensitivity to high-sulfur supplements (MSM, DMSO, sulfates, garlic,
  • Headaches or brain fog after consuming high-sulfur foods
  • Sulfur- or rotten egg smelling flatulence or belching
  • High sensitivity to alcohol and/or aldehydes
  • High sensitivity to caffeine
  • Fatigue or low energy
  • Reduced ability to tolerate certain detoxification processes

These signs can have many possible causes, so nutritional testing may be helpful when available.

Adequate molybdenum levels help support normal detoxification pathways and cellular metabolism.

ZeoLyte 150g ZeoLyte 150g

ZeoLyte Instructions

Important Note

Important: Dr. Smith advises against using liquid zeolite products and recommends using only “cleaned” zeolite products.

Examples of cleaned zeolite products include ZeoLyte, ZeoCharge, and G-Pur.

Basic Instructions

Take your ZeoLyte dose mixed in water or another beverage.

ZeoLyte may also be taken with activated charcoal and/or other mineral supplements.

Dosing

Important: The dosing approach for ZeoLyte is different from many other supplement strategies.

Zeolite products mobilize toxic substances in the body. If the amount taken is too small, some individuals may feel temporarily worse.

For some individuals, larger doses may be less likely to cause temporary detox-type reactions than smaller doses.

Individuals with higher toxic burdens may require larger doses to avoid unwanted symptoms.

This concept has sometimes been referred to as the “Zeolite Dosing Paradox.”

A very common issue when starting ZeoLyte is taking doses that are too small.

If symptoms occur after taking ZeoLyte, increasing the dose at the next use may help reduce those symptoms.

This approach is very different from Dr. Smith’s typical supplement dosing strategies.

In many cases, starting with a higher dose may be preferable to starting with a very small dose.

Over time, the dose needed to avoid temporary reactions may decrease.

Dosing Strategy

Many people find it helpful to take their full daily amount in one dose rather than dividing it into several smaller doses.

Example Protocol

An example higher-dose ZeoLyte protocol that tapers over time:

  • Month 1: 6 scoops/day (30 g/day)

  • Month 2: 5 scoops/day (25 g/day)

  • Month 3: 4 scoops/day (20 g/day)

  • Month 4: 3 scoops/day (15 g/day)

  • Month 5: 2 scoops/day (10 g/day)

  • Month 6 and beyond: 1 scoop/day (5 g/day)

Skipping Doses

It is acceptable to skip days or take breaks from ZeoLyte if needed.

Taking an adequate dose less frequently may be preferable to taking doses that are too small.

The key principle is ensuring that the dose taken is sufficient for your needs.

Managing Reactions

If symptoms occur after taking a smaller dose, taking a larger amount later may help reduce the reaction.

Adjusting the dose upward during the next use may help prevent similar reactions.

• ANYTHING you feel is hormonally-related

If symptoms are significant, reduce the dose or discontinue use and consult a qualified healthcare professional.

Additional Information for Keystone Minerals PLUS Niacin

Flush Niacin

Keystone Minerals PLUS Niacin CONTAINS FLUSH NIACIN.

You should EXPECT to experience flushing.

This is not an allergic reaction, but a well-known physiological response to flush niacin that occurs in the skin.

Common flushing symptoms include:

• Skin redness (erythema)
• Skin warmth or heat
• Itching or tingling

After the warmth subsides, some people experience temporary shivering or a cool sensation.

The entire process may last 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the individual.

If You Want to Stop the Flush

If you strongly wish to stop the flush reaction, a baby aspirin (81mg) or half a regular aspirin (~163mg) can reduce flushing.

This “aspirin rescue” is only suggested if someone is really uncomfortable. It will negate any beneficial effects of the niacin.

Consult your healthcare professional before using aspirin if you have medical conditions or take medications.

Important Reminder

You are NOT “chasing the flush”, and you are also not trying to avoid it either.

The flush niacin in Keystone Minerals PLUS Niacin comes as zinc niacinate/nicotinate, which means it is ALREADY BUFFERED.

Things That Reduce Flushing

  • Taking with a meal
  • Taking with protein
  • Taking with fiber
  • Good hydration
  • Taking it daily (not skipping days)
  • Splitting the daily dose into multiple doses (first dose may flush, later ones usually flush little to none)

Things That Increase Flushing

  • Taking on an empty stomach
  • Sugar or a high-sugar diet
  • Dehydration
  • Skipping days between doses

Flush Niacin 25mg Flush Niacin 25mg

Flush Niacin 25 mg Instructions

Dosing

It is suggested to begin with Flush Niacin 25 mg once daily to minimize flushing and gradually increase to your target dose as tolerated.

Flush niacin can be dosed anywhere from 25 mg per day up to 5000 mg per day.

Always take with food.

Start at a lower dose and gradually increase as tolerated.

How to Take Flush Niacin

Take Flush Niacin with food to reduce the chance of gastrointestinal discomfort.

Avoid alcohol when taking flush niacin supplements.

If you experience severe flushing, dizziness, or rapid heartbeat, discontinue use and seek medical advice.

Understanding the Flush

“Flushing” is a normal response when taking flush niacin, that’s why it is called “flush” niacin.

This response occurs in the skin and is not an allergic reaction.

Flushing in the earliest stages often includes:

  • skin redness (erythema)
  • skin warmth or heat
  • itching
  • Tingling

After the warmth wears off, some people experience temporary shivering or a cold sensation.

Depending on the individual, flushing may last from about 30 minutes to 2 hours.

If you feel the need to reduce the flushing, a baby aspirin (81 mg) or half a regular aspirin (~163 mg) may help.

This approach is generally only needed if the flushing becomes very uncomfortable. Using aspirin to stop the flush will negate any potential benefits of the flush niacin.

Remember, you are not trying to chase the flush, and you are also not trying to completely avoid it.

These result in LESS flushing:

  • Taking with a meal
  • Taking with protein
  • Taking with fiber
  • Staying well-hydrated
  • Take flush niacin daily, without skipping days
  • Splitting the daily total dose into multiple doses
  • The first dose may flush, while later doses may produce less flushing or none

These result in STRONGER flushing:

  • Taking on an empty stomach
  • Sugar or a generally high-sugar diet
  • Dehydration
  • Skipping days

Liquid Zinc Liquid Zinc

Liquid Zinc Instructions

Dosing

Important: For sensitive individuals, it is highly suggested to start with the Liquid Zinc (2 mg zinc per drop) rather than the capsules, as smaller doses are more easily taken to begin.

Recommended Intake: A maximum of 30 mg total zinc per day (15 drops of Liquid Zinc) from supplements is suggested for individuals who are not undergoing regular nutritional testing (hair or blood testing) to monitor their zinc levels.

If negative symptoms occur at any dose, reduce the dose to the previous level that was well tolerated.

How to Start Zinc Supplementation

Important: For sensitive individuals, it is highly suggested to start with the Liquid Zinc, as smaller doses are more easily taken to begin.

It is suggested to start with 1 drop per day (2 mg zinc) and increase by 1 drop per day until reaching 15 drops per day (30 mg total zinc) or until a dose that causes unwanted symptoms is reached (see symptom list below).

If this occurs, return to the previous dose that was well tolerated.

How to Take Zinc

Always take zinc supplements with food.

Taking zinc on an empty stomach or with too little food may result in nausea.

If this occurs, eating additional food typically resolves the nausea quickly.

To maximize absorption, take your zinc supplements with the lowest-fiber meal of the day.

Possible Excessive Zinc Symptoms

Possible Symptoms of Excess Zinc Intake (we refer to this as “stirring up copper”):

Your tolerated dose may change over time.

Possible Symptoms of Excess Zinc Intake (“stirring up copper”):

  • Fatigue
  • Brain fog
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Irritability
  • Racing mind
  • Difficulty falling asleep
  • Headaches
  • Inner trembling or a buzzing nerve sensation
  • Limb weakness (both arms, both legs, or both)
  • Heart palpitations anytime, especially before bed
  • Other symptoms that may feel hormonally related
